WICHITA, Kan. - San Diego State used solid defensive play at the net plus timely offense to defeat North Texas, 3-0 (30-21, 30-15, 30-24), in the opening match of the Green Mill Restaurant Volleyball Classic at Wichita State Friday morning. The win snapped a two-match losing streak for the Aztecs, who saw their record improved to 5-3. With the loss, the Mean Green saw its 2003 ledger fall to 5-4.
Three Aztecs contributed 10 kills apiece to pace SDSU: seniors Zlatina Anguelova, Megan Schauermann and Melissa Cansdale. Anguelova added 13 digs to record her second double-double of the year. Schauermann led the Aztecs with a .500 attack percentage (10-2-16) for the match followed by Cansdale's .421 (10-2-19).
Solid play at the next was again a major factor in SDSU's success as it recorded 14.5 team blocks compared to just three for North Texas. The Aztecs' 27 block assists for the match came on the heels of a school-record 41 block assists in their five-match loss to 20th-ranked Santa Clara a week ago.
Leading the way at the net for San Diego State were Schauermann and Cansdale, who had eight blocks apiece.
North Texas' Corina Marginas and Brittney Gregory tied for match honors with 12 kills each, but the Mean Green was held to just a .081 hitting percentage over the three games. The Aztecs, meanwhile, finished with a .295 attack percentage for the match.
San Diego State continues play in Wichita later today when it takes on Nicholls State at 4:30 p.m. (CDT).
