Women's Soccer Loses to UC Irvine, 4-1

FULLERTON, Calif. - The UC Irvine Anteaters defeated the San Diego State Aztecs in a women's soccer game Monday afternoon, 4-1. The game was played at Fullerton's Titan Stadium as part of the 2003 SOCCER TOWN Classic. The Aztecs fell to 0-2 on the season with the loss.

UC Irvine wasted no time in getting on the board in the fifth minute of the match as forward Kim Lloyd booted a perfectly-placed rocket from 18 yards out into the upper left corner of the frame for the 1-0 lead. Midfielder Caroline Kabe notched the assist on the play.

Forward Hayley McNallen added the Anteaters' second goal of the half, taking a pass from Lindsay Duke and fighting through through two defenders and chipping it over the Aztec goalkeeper Stephanie Pearson's head for a 2-0 advantage.

Lloyd added her second goal of the match just six minutes later, taking a short cross from forward Lachelle Manzano and firing it home from three yards out to make it 3-0 and it stayed that way until the half.

In the second half, forward Lauryn Birkenshaw took a long pass from defender Tara Weldon and ran 45 yards up the right side before chipping it into the upper left corner for a 4-0 lead.

San Diego State got on the board in the 72nd minute as Kim Castellanos converted on a penalty kick for the final score.

UCI held a 9-4 advantage in shots. The teams combined for 35 fouls in the physical game.

San Diego State returns to action hosting Long Beach State at 3 p.m. Thursday.
