San Diego - Junior defender Kenny Fechner was selected to College Soccer News National Team of the Week for his play in the SDSU Soccer Classic. Fechner assisted on three Aztec goals, including both scores in SDSU's win over Oregon State. He was also a key component to the Aztecs first shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Long Island. Fechner was one of 11 players from around the country selected to the CSN Team of the Week and was also named the SDSU Soccer Classic's most outstanding defender.
Fechner's first assist came with only six seconds left in the game against OSU as he lobbed a pass into Ryan Curtis for the game tying goal. Three minutes into overtime, Fechner got the ball to freshman Colin Jennings who fired a shot into the right corner for the 2-1 victory. His third assist of the weekend came on Sunday's first goal. Again Fechner lobbed a pass into the box, with Heath Creager being the recipient for the game winning goal. The assists were the first points for Fechner as an Aztec after two seasons at Yavapai College and a medical redshirt season a year ago.
The Aztecs are 2-0 on the season and are ranked ninth in the latest NSCAA/adidas Far West Regional poll. SDSU will play at Point Loma Nazerene on Thursday at 4:00 pm.
