IRVINE, Calif. - Kara Moriarty and Aspen McPartland recorded 17 and 15 kills respectively as San Diego State defeated Hofstra, 3-0 (30-28, 30-25, 30-21), in a match played at UC Irvine Sunday afternoon. The victory was the second straight for SDSU, which improved to 2-1 on the young season. Hofstra saw its record fall to 0-3.
Moriarty, who has hit double figures in kills in each of the Aztecs' first three matches, also had 12 digs to record her first career double-double. She hit .364 on the day and also contributed a pair of blocks. Her kill and digs total were both career best for the junior from Idaho Falls.
McPartland, meanwhile, hit .310 and also had seven digs and a block. In addition, setter Sara Engstrom had a personal best .545 attack percentage with six kills and no errors. Her 40 assists as also her best as an Aztec.
The Pride was led by Tessa Spahr, who had 15 kills and 11 digs. Hofstra hit just .165 over the three games, but SDSU did not fare much better at .182. The difference came in total kills where the Aztecs had 56 compared to 36 by The Pride.
Up next for the Aztecs is a trip to Tucson where they will compete in the Wildcat Classic at the University of Arizona on Thursday and Friday (Sept. 4-5). In addition to the host team, the Aztecs will also face Rhode Island on Thursday and both Miami and Santa Clara on Friday.
