SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State football squad put the wraps on its second training camp under head coach Tom Craft Wednesday morning with a 56-play scrimmage at the Aztec practice facility.
For the second time in two scrimmages, freshmen provided the highlight as San Diego State spent much of the day establishing the depth chart. Established starters on both sides of the ball saw limited action after the first portion of the workout.
Freshman receiver Brett Swain was on the receiving end of a 37-yard touchdown strike from sophomore quarterback Matt Dlugolecki and freshman running back Brandon Bornes broke off a 38-yard touchdown run. At Family Day on Saturday, frosh running back Lynell Hamilton sent a buzz through the crowd with a 49-yard scoring jaunt.
Other impressive performances by newcomers on Wednesday included a dazzling 31-yard reception by Devin Pitts of an Adam Hall pass and two catches for 33 yards by junior transfer tight end Jeremy Justice.
"What we tried to do in practice this week showed up today in the scrimmage," said head coach Tom Craft. "Our tackling improved as did our offense. We put our people in situations in which they had to respond under stress and I think it showed up today. We were a little better today and more functional."
In all, nine players had pass receptions and 11 players were credited with a rush during the action. Four quarterbacks, Hall, Dlugolecki, freshman Kevin O'Connell and Kevin Pierce all saw action.
The Aztecs got goal-line situation touchdowns from Hamilton (three yards) and Fale Poumele (one yard).
The Aztec kicking game continued to evolve as senior walkon J.C. Mejia hit five of his seven attempts, including a 47-yarder. One of his two misses came from 52 yards out.
