Family Day Crowd Gets First Look At Aztecs

Aug. 16, 2003

SAN DIEGO - A sun-drenched crowd of approximately 2,000 attended San Diego State's annual Family Day Saturday morning at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

A flea market, the first major scrimmage of the fall and an autograph session combined to draw one of the biggest crowds ever to the annual event.

On the field, the Aztec defense more than held its own against San Diego State's diverse offensive attack. All America linebacker candidate Kirk Morrison had a pair of explosive hits and safety Josh Dean ended the scrimmage with a punishing blow on running back DeAngelo Nedd as he headed over the middle as a secondary receiver. In all, the defense forced three turnovers, including an interception by redshirt freshman Donny Baker, and was credited with eight quarterback sacks.

"I thought it was a typical first scrimmage in that the defense was ahead of the offense," said second-year head coach Tom Craft. "I don't think we're in great condition and that led to some mistakes in the second portion of the scrimmage."

The Aztecs committed a total of nine penalties, six by the offense and three by the defense.

The offensive highlight was delivered by the player many Aztec fans came to see. True freshman running back Lynell Hamilton, the top-rated recruit in the Mountain West Conference in February, delivered a 49-yard touchdown run and finished the day with 63 yards on eight carries.

"On the first play I was trying to figure out my holes and I got hit pretty good," said the Stockton native. "It kind of woke me up and now I am ready for college ball."

Sophomore running back Michael Franklin opened with the first team offense at running back. However, he suffered a minor knee sprain and carried just one time for four yards after having a nifty 10-yard run wiped out by a penalty. He is expected to miss just one day of practice as the Aztecs escaped the full-scale scrimmage without any major injuries.

Another rushing touchdown was recorded by Oceanside's Fale Poumele on a six-yard run during a red zone offense set.

San Diego State will have a quick walkthrough on Sunday before hitting the field twice on Monday, beginning with a morning workout at 8:40 a.m.
