San Diego - San Diego State junior outfielder Anthony Gwynn was selected in the second round by the Milwaukee Brewers during the first day of the 2003 Major League draft on Tuesday (June 3). He was one of four SDSU players picked during the first 20 rounds.
Gwynn, a member of the 2003 All-Mountain West Conference team, finished this past season with a .359 batting average to lead San Diego State in hitting. He led the Aztecs with 97 hits, seven triples and 25 stolen bases. His hit total ranks as the ninth-most ever for an SDSU player and his 15 career triples ties the SDSU record. He also ranks among the Aztec top 10 in career runs, hits, at bats, triples and steals.
In addition to Gwynn, former Aztec second baseman Peter Stonard was a fourth-round pick of the San Diego Padres. The selection of these two players brings to six the number of Aztecs who have been taken in the first five rounds over the past three years.
Senior pitcher Mike Moat (Chicago White Sox - 19th round) and junior hurler Joe Carque (Arizona Diamondbacks - 20th round) were also selected on Tuesday. Moat went 6-6 with a 4.58 earned run average this season while Carque finished 5-5 with a 4.81 ERA. Both were members of the Aztecs' starting rotation and pitched over 100 innings in 2003.
