Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Brigham Young

Provo, Utah - San Diego State and Brigham Young split a doubleheader Friday at Larry H. Miller Field in Provo as both teams remain tied for third place in the Mountain West Conference with four regular-season games remaining. The Aztecs (23-29; 15-11 MWC) won the opener 11-4 while the Cougars (23-21; 15-11 MWC) took the nightcap 9-5.

In game one, the Aztecs got standout offensive performances from juniors Anthony Gwynn and Rielly Embrey. Gwynn went 5-for-5 with a double and three runs scored, Embrey matched Gwynn's game with five hits including a double, home run and six runs batted in.

Trailing 4-3 after four innings, SDSU got three runs in both the fifth and sixth frames to take control of the contest. RBI singles by Embrey, Jake McLintock and Rielly Wilson accounted for the runs in the fifth with Garrett Cook's RBI single and Embrey two-run homer bringing home three runs in the sixth to give the Aztecs a 9-4 lead.

At that point, the rains came, causing a one hour, 18 minute delay in play. When the game resumed, Daryl Harang came on in relief of Aztec starter Mike Moat to pitch the final three innings. Moat picked up the win to even his record at 5-5 while Harang recorded his first save. BYU starter Jeff Mousser suffered the loss to fall to5-6 on the year.

In game two, the Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. SDSU climbed back into the contest with a pair of runs in the fifth, courtesy of a Brigham Young fielding miscue. With Jake McLintock and Chad Corona at third and second respectively with one out, Josh Allen hit a grounder to first base. BYU's Jake Stubblefield stepped on first, then fired the ball home attempting to prevent McLintock from scoring, When his throw sailed by the catcher, both runners ended up scoring.

However, Aztec starting pitcher Joe Carque and reliever Ronnie Lindsey ran into control problems in the bottom of the inning as the Cougars scored five times to take an 8-2 lead. BYU scored its runs on six walks, five wild pitches, a single and a double as it sent 11 men to the plate.

SDSU brought on senior Ben Leuthard in relief in the next inning, and his first pitch was deposited over the left center field fence by Ranger Wiens to complete the Cougar scoring. The Aztecs added a three runs in the ninth on RBIs by Kyle Floquet, Landon Burt and Garrett Cook.

Jacinto, who went eight innings scattering 5 hits, picked up the win to improve to 8-5. SDSU's Joe Carque took the loss to fall to 4-5. Landon Burt and Chad Corona had two hits apiece for San Diego State.

The Aztecs and Cougars wrap up their three-game series on Saturday (May 10) with game time set for 1:00 p.m. (MDT). That contest can be heard live on the Internet at www.goaztecs.com with the pregame show starting 10 minutes prior to game time.
