San Diego - San Diego State scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to break a scoreless deadlock and defeated UNLV, 3-0, at Tony Gwynn Stadium Sunday afternoon. The win snapped SDSU's three-game losing streak as it improved to 22-27 overall and 14-10 in the Mountain West Conference, climbing back into a tie for third in the league with BYU in the process. The loss dropped UNLV to 37-13 (20-4 MWC).
The first seven innings of the contest was a pitching duel between San Diego State freshman Ben Coon and UNLV's Jake Vose. Coon went 6.2 innings, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out three. Vose, who was the losing pitcher and saw his record fall to 6-5, scattered 10 hits over his 7.1 innings of work.
The Aztecs' eighth-inning rally began with a one-out single by designated hitter Garrett Cook. Rielly Embrey followed with a bunt single, and when Rebel catcher Stephen Ghutzman's throw went into right field, Cook advanced to third.
ULNV made a pitching change, with Ryan Braun coming on it relief of Vose. Chad Corona greeted Braun with an RBI double to right, scoring Cook and sending Embrey to third. Embrey then scored on a wild pitch, and Corona came home on an RBI single by left fielder David Hall.
Junior lefty Drew Jenson, who came on in relief of Coon with two out in the seventh, picked up the victory to improve to 7-1 on the season. He closed out the game with a double play after putting two on with one out in the top of the ninth.
Junior center fielder Anthony Gwynn was again the hitting star for the Aztecs with three hits on the afternoon. Over the three-game series, Gwynn went 9-for-12. Catcher Troy Perdue, making his second start of the season, had a pair of hits for the second time in a week while Corona (two doubles) and Curt Mendoza also reached safely twice.
