SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's track and field squad won two events and recorded 18 other top-three finishes Saturday at the Steve Scott Invitational hosted by UC Irvine in Irvine, Calif. The Aztecs also tallied nine NCAA regional qualifying times/marks at the meet held at Anteater Stadium.
The Aztecs got one win each on the track and in the field events. Senior Tonette Dyer (Shreveport, La.) successfully defended her 200-meter title from a year ago, beating out her 26 competitors by tying her season-best of 23.52. Dyer also ran the top time by a collegian in the 100 meters, posting her second NCAA regional qualifying effort of the meet of 11.67, a career best and fourth-fastest in school history.
SDSU's other win went to freshman Jamillah Titus (American Canyon, Calif.) who tied for first in the high jump by clearing 5-5.00 for the second time this season.
In the 400-meter hurdles, the Aztecs showed off their depth as all three entrants, seniors Leslie Miller (Humble, Texas) and Ryan Peters (Oakland, Calif.) and freshman Shanon Meyer (Hesperia, Calif.), finished with NCAA regional qualifying times in a sweep of the second through fourth place spots.
Miller would later go on to log a team season-best and an NCAA qualifying throw in the javelin of 137-10, which was good for second place. Other runner-up finishes went to senior Melinda Smedley (Stockton, Calif.) in the 200 meters (24.17), senior Jini Hogg (San Francisco, Calif.) in the 400 meters (55.78), sophomore Shayla Balentine (Los Osos, Calif.) in the pole vault (12-00.00), junior Hollann Givens (San Diego, Calif.) in the triple jump (38-03.50) and junior Candace Hill (San Diego, Calif.) in both the discus (156-10) and the shot put (45-06.25).
San Diego State will be back on the road next weekend for the Oxy Invitational May 10 in its final tune-up for the 2003 Mountain West Conference championships, May 14-17, in Albuquerque, N.M.
