SDSU's Maiberger Pulls Upset to Advance to Round of 16 in NCAA Singles

May 22, 2003

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Oliver Maiberger lost just four games in upsetting eighth-seeded David Martin of Stanford, 6-1, 6-3, in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship on Thursday morning in Athens, Ga. Maiberger is the only remaining player in the field that has played in the last four NCAA Singles Championships.

With the victory, Maiberger advances to the round of 16 meeting the criteria necessary to earn All-American honors in singles play. A native of Lorsch, Germany, Maiberger has now won five All-America honors in his Aztec career, earning the distinction in singles in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and in doubles in 2002 and 2003.

Maiberger, ranked 42nd nationally in singles, dominated the second round match and tied for the second most one-sided match of the day. The only player to lose fewer games in the second round was Daniel Klemetz of Middle Tennessee State who posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Tulsa's Alejandro Tejerina. Maiberger will face 14th-ranked Rameez Junaid of Auburn in the third round on Friday.

Later in the day, Maiberger teamed with Ryan Redondo in the NCAA doubles Championship. The second-seeded duo in the 32-team field held true through the first round with a straight sets win over 21st-ranked Hector Alamada and Sergui Modoc of Fresno State in the first round. The 6-3, 6-4 win moves the pair into the round of 16 where they will face the winner of the Reynolds/Smith and Cerratani/Drake match.

Doubles matches were scheduled to begin early afternoon, but rain in the Athens area forced the championships to be moved indoors on Thursday where only four courts are available. That pushed singles matches into late afternoon and has subsequently pushed back the start of the doubles championship.
