Albuquerque - San Diego State outfielder Anthony Gwynn and catcher Josh Allen have been named to the All-Mountain West Conference first team for their efforts during the 2003 season. In addition, junior pitcher Drew Jenson earned second team honors. It was the first all-league award for all three Aztec players, each of whom played their high school ball in San Diego County.
Gwynn, a junior from Poway, Calif., (Poway HS), hit .404 in conference play with 10 doubles three triples, 20 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. His bating average ranked fourth in the league and his 10 steals was the second-best mark in MWC play. He was also errorless in center field in 30 conference games.
Allen, a senior from San Diego (Grossmont HS/Grossmont JC), hit .383 with six doubles and a pair of home runs in 19 games. He had an on-base percentage of .471 and fielded .991 behind the plate.
Jenson, who came to SDSU from El Capitan HS in Lakeside, Calif., led the conference with a 2.38 earned run average over 12 appearances. He compiled a mark of 6-1 and also recorded four saves in MWC action.
The Aztecs are in Albuquerque this week to participate in the MWC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday (May 21). SDSU will face Utah in the first round beginning at 3:00 p.m. (MDT)
