Box Score

Provo, Utah - San Diego State failed to take advantage two excellent scoring opportunities in the middle innings, and Brigham Young made SDSU pay by coming back to defeat the Aztecs, 5-4, at Larry H. Miller Field in Provo Saturday afternoon. The loss dropped San Diego State's overall record to 23-30 as it fell into fourth place in the Mountain West Conference at 15-12. BYU improved to 24-21 on the year and 16-11 in league play.

San Diego State came out swinging, scoring four times in the first inning on a two-run double by Garett Cook and a two-run home run by Curt Mendoza.

Aztec starter Ben Coon sailed through the first two innings before a two-out misjudged fly ball allowed two Cougar runs to score in the third and cut the SDSU lead in half.

San Diego State then wasted two chances to increase its lead. In the fifth, the Aztecs loaded the bases with one out, but could not score. In the next inning, they put runners on first and third with one out, but again came up empty.

Those missed opportunities came back to haunt them as BYU scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. Kainoa Obrey's two-run homer tied the contest, and Casey Cloward's two-out bunt single scored Brock Jacobsen from third base later in the inning.

Cougar starter Ken Gravley went 6.2 innings to pick up the win and improve to 4-1 on the year. Michael Bergeron tossed the final 2.1 innings to record his second save. SDSU's Ben Coon suffered the loss to even his season mark at 4-4.

Freshman shortstop James Guerrero led SDSU with three hits on the afternoon while Garrett Cook had a single in addition to his run-scoring double.

San Diego State concludes its 2003 regular season this week when it hosts New Mexico in a three-game series beginning Thursday, May 15, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
