SAN DIEGO - With two weeks remaining before the Mountain West Conference championships, the San Diego State track and field squad heads to UC Irvine for the Steve Scott Invitational Saturday at Anteater Stadium in Irvine, Calif.
Field events get underway at 10 a.m. with the javelin, while the track events are slated for a 12:20 p.m. start with the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The meet is named in honor of UCI graduate Steve Scott, the American record-holder in the mile and a three-time Olympian. Currently the head track coach at Cal State San Marcos, Scott was a six-time All-American in track and cross-country at UCI.
The Aztecs, ranked 10th in this week's coaches' power rankings, are scheduled to send 31 competitors to this Saturday's meet. Other schools participating include: Cal Poly Pomona, Claremont Mudd, CSU Dominguez Hills, CSU Fullerton, CSU San Marcos, Pt. Loma Nazarene, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara and UNLV.
A year ago, SDSU recorded 12, top-three finishes at the Steve Scott Invitational. Aztec Leslie Miller (Humble, Texas) was a double-event winner in the 100 and 400-meter hurdles, Tonette Dyer (Shreveport, La.) placed first in the 200, Jini Hogg (San Francisco, Calif.) ran the fastest time in the 400 and the 4x400 relay came in first in 3:40.55.
