Aztecs Denied Second Title Of Season, Tie For Third At Border Olympics

April 5, 2003

LAREDO, Texas - The San Diego State men's golf team closed the gap on the leaders in the final round of The Border Olympics, but actually slipped in the standings into a tie for third place. The Aztecs, who entered the day seven shots back of second-round leader Arkansas, closed to within two shots of the Razorbacks and host Texas A&M (859), which ended up as the team title-winner in a playoff.

SDSU shot a final-round 289 and its final total of 3-under 861 tied with Baylor, last year's champion. The Aztecs (No. 36 Golfweek/No. 40 Golfstat), the second-highest ranked team in the field behind No. 23/21 Arkansas, recorded their third under-par total of the season after coming their worst performances of the season in the last two events. The host Aggies (No. 62 Golfweek/No. 58 Golfstat) shot the low round of the day with a 10-under 278 to come all the way back from sixth place and 16 shots down after the second round.

Senior Lars Johansson (Karlskrona, Sweden/Champanskolam HS), who entered the day just two shots back of the individual leaders while looking for his second title of the spring, shot a final-round 74 and ended up in fourth place at 5-under 211. Johansson finished six shots behind medalist Andrew Dahl of Arkansas (205, -11), the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 30 by Golfweek. Johansson's fourth-place finish is his second top-10 of the year and comes after 61st- and 58th-place finishes in his last two events after winning the spring-opening John Burns Intercollegiate in February.

Junior Mark Warman (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) improved his score by three shots in each of the last two rounds (75-72-69) and his 3-under-par performance in the final round netted his fifth top-20 of the year. He ended up in a tie for 15th place at even-par 216 along with senior Brian Miller (Madras, Ore./Saddleback JC), who improved his score by one in each round (73-72-71) for his best result as an Aztec starter this year.

Sophomore Aaron Choi (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and freshman Andrew Scott (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) each recorded final-round 75s and finished in 50th and 65th place, respectively.

SDSU has less than a week off before another Friday-Saturday event at the April 11-12 ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
