SAN DIEGO - Senior Katja Karrento broke a 3-3 tie with a straight-set victory at number four singles lifting 28th-ranked San Diego State to a 4-3 victory over 56th-ranked Brigham Young on Friday afternoon in Provo, Utah.
San Diego State won for the 11th time in 12 outings and improved to 16-4 overall and 5-1 in Mountain West Conference play. The Cougars dropped to 7-10 on the season and 2-2 in league play.
"We knew they were going to be tough," SDSU head coach Peter Mattera said. "It was a very exciting college match and I am very satisfied with the victory. It is always difficult going on the road in conference and to play in altitude and indoors added to that. This was a great team win."
The match, moved indoors due to a snowstorm in Utah on Thursday, was played on just four courts. The Aztecs trailed 3-2 when Katalina Romero won a three-set match at number three singles to tie the score early during the number four singles match and set the stage for Karrento.
Karrento won a pair of tiebreakers to record a 7-6, 7-6 victory over Rebecca Pike.
"I giver her so much credit," Mattera said. "She had two of the finest tie-breakers I have seen in front of difficult crowd with the team match on the line. She played great to slam the door shut in both sets."
Karrento and Indra Erichsen were the only Aztec players to record victories in both singles and doubles on the afternoon.
San Diego State is back in action tomorrow when the Aztecs play at Utah.
