SDSU Men's Golf In Second After Second Round Of Border Olympics

April 4, 2003

LAREDO, Texas - The San Diego State men's golf team returned to form in the first day of action at The Border Olympics, completing the first 36 holes at 4-under to stand in second place at 572. The Aztecs, who are coming off season-worst 11th- and ninth-place finishes in their last two tournaments, followed up an even-par first round (288) with a 284 in the second to pull within seven shots of leader Arkansas (565, -11).

The Razorbacks (No. 23 Golfweek/No. 21 Golfstat) are the only team in the field ranked higher than the No. 36/40 Aztecs, who are right where the rankings would dictate after having made up five shots on the lead thanks to Arkansas's second-round 1-over 289. SDSU holds a three-shot advantage on third-place Baylor, which has won of the past five Border Olympics titles, and leads the other two Mountain West teams in the field, fourth-place BYU (577, +1) and sixth-place Colorado State (581, +5).

Senior Lars Johansson (Karlskrona, Sweden/Champanskolam HS) fired a 5-under 67 to propel the Aztecs' second-round charge that also included two other players with even-par scores. Johansson stands in third place, just two shots behind leader Mark Van Hoose of Lamar (135, -9). Van Hoose, ranked No. 340 in the Golfweek standings, is the surprise leader in holding a one-shot lead over second-place No. 30 Andrew Dahl of Arkansas (136, -8), the top-ranked contender in the field. Johansson, who struggled to 61st- and 58th-place finishes in his last two events after winning the spring-opening John Burns Intercollegiate in February, shot a first-round 70 and is 7-under-par at 137 while challenging for his second title of the spring and fourth of his career.

Johansson is the only Aztec in the top 20, but senior Brian Miller (Madras, Ore./Saddleback JC) is just 1-over-par and shares 24th place at 145. In his first start of the spring, Miller shot consistent rounds of 73-72.

Two Aztecs are among the 13 golfers tied for 36th place at 3-over 147. Junior Mark Warman (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) followed a first-round 75 with an even-par 72, while sophomore Aaron Choi (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) slipped from his 2-under 70 for the first 18 holes to a second-round 77. Freshman Andrew Scott (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) was four shots better in the second round (73) than the first (77) and is tied for 62nd at 6-over 150.

Play resumes tomorrow for the final 18 holes of the nation's second oldest collegiate tournament, The 52nd Border Olympics.
