Aztec Comeback Falls Short In 7-5 Loss To Brigham Young

April 4, 2003

Box Score

San Diego - Brigham Young scored six times in the top of the first inning and held on to defeat San Diego State, 7-5, Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The victory moved BYU to 13-15 on the year and 6-5 in Mountain West Conference play as the Cougars climbed to within a game of the third-place Aztecs. SDSU saw its record fall to 14-19 overall and 7-4 in the league.

BYU used three singles, two doubles and a home run along with a walk and hit batter to knock Aztec starter Ben Coon (3-2) out of the game in the opening frame with just a third of an inning to his credit. The big hits included a two-run homer by Ryan Chambers and a two-run single by Blair Lucas.

Brigham Young hurler Paul Jacinto, who evened his season record at 4-4 with the win, held the Aztecs in check over the first three innings. However, SDSU struck for three runs in the fourth on a two-RBI single from Rielly Embrey and a run-scoring balk by Jacinto.

The Aztecs closed the score to 6-4 with another run in the next frame as Jake McLintock doubled home Peter Stonard, who had singled.

BYU regained a three-run lead with a run in the seventh. After a single by Wade Vest, Chambers hit a triple down the left field line that just eluded the glove of a diving Landon Burt.

The Aztecs got a run back in the eighth on a walk to Josh Allen, a balk, and a double by Anthony Gwynn to pull with two again, but that's as close as they would get. Cougar pitchers Jacinto and reliever Michel Bergeron, who recorded his first save, struck out 13 Aztecs on the night.

SDSU was led offensively by Peter Stonard's three hits while McLintock, Embrey and James Guerrero also had two apiece. The Cougars had a pair of players record three hits on the night including Chambers and first baseman Jake Stubblefield.

San Diego State and Brigham Young conclude their three-game series Saturday afternoon (April 5) at 1:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
