SAN DIEGO - For the first time in school history, the San Diego State men's team was chosen as one of 16 hosts of the NCAA First and Second Round Championship matches, the NCAA announced on Wednesday.
The event will be held May 10 and 11 at the SDSU Courts on the campus of San Diego State University. The winner of the sub-regional will advance to the round of 16 in Athens, Ga., on May 17.
The Aztec men, ranked 29th nationally with a 15-9 record, advanced to the 64-team field for the fifth time in six seasons. San Diego State faces cross-town rival San Diego (13-9) in its NCAA First Round contest on Saturday, May 10 beginning at noon PDT. That match will be preceded by the other first-round match played at SDSU, featuring 12th-ranked Washington, the tournament's 16th seed, against American, is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. PDT. The winners of those two matches will play on Sunday, May 11, beginning at noon PDT.
San Diego State claimed its second consecutive Mountain West Conference Championship over the weekend with a 4-0 victory over New Mexico. The Aztecs have won five straight and 10 of their last 11 matches. Three-time All-American Oliver Maiberger, who last week earned his third conference player of the year honor, leads San Diego State. The senior is ranked 42nd nationally in singles and teams with Ryan Redondo to form the nation's second-ranked doubles team.
Tickets for the NCAA First and Second Round matches played in San Diego may be purchased at the SDSU Courts the day of the tournament. Singles day tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students with identification.
