Colorado Springs - After being shut out the previous day, the San Diego State offense came alive Sunday afternoon as the Aztecs defeated Air Force, 13-5, at Falcon Field in Colorado Springs. In addition to their 14-hit attack, the Aztecs also got solid pitching from junior reliever Drew Jenson as they improved to 21-24 on the season and 13-8 in the Mountain West Conference. With the loss, the Falcons fell to 13-28 overall (1-19 MWC).
After Air Force took a 2-0 lead in the third, San Diego State answered back with four in the top of the fourth, getting RBIs from Josh Allen, Ryan Wilson and Anthony Gwynn.
The turning point of the contest may have come in the bottom of that inning when the Falcons loaded the bases with one out off SDSU starter Ronnie Lindsey. Jenson entered the contest at that point and proceeded to get leadoff hitter Zach McAngus to ground into a fielder choice to Chad Corona, who got the force at the plate. Jenson then struck out center fielder Mike Rose to end the inning.
From there, SDSU scored nine runs over the next three frames including seven in the top of the seventh. During that seventh-inning outburst, SDSU connected for five doubles including a pair by designated hitter Garrett Cook. The big blow of the inning was a bases-loaded two-bagger by Gwynn that brought home three runs. Junior Landon Burt followed Gwynn's double with a two run homer, the first of his Aztec career.
Jenson, who went 4.2 innings, improved his record to 6-1 on the year, allowing three hits including a three-run consolation homer by Brent Tittle in the eighth. Air Force starter Clayton Couch took the loss to fall to 0-3.
Anthony Gwynn finished his day with three hits, four RBI and a run scored while teammate Garret Cook also had three hits and scored twice.
Up next for the Aztecs is a trip to Riverside on Tuesday (April 29) where they will face the UCR Highlanders at 6:00 p.m. SDSU returns home on Friday (May 2) to begin a three-game series with league-leading UNLV.
