SUNRIVER, Ore. - When the first day of the Mountain West Conference Championship was moved due to snow to the unfamiliar Awbrey Glen Golf Club in Bend, the San Diego State women's golf team stood in fifth place after a round of 321. The Aztecs could never recover from their disappointing first round, nor could they escape that fifth-place position when the final two rounds of the tournament shifted to its intended site at the Sunriver Resort. When all was said and done, SDSU completed the conference championship with its highest score of the spring, a 54-hole total of 78-over 934 that stood in that familiar fifth place.
New Mexico, which trailed by 11 shots after the first round, completed its impressive comeback with a final-round 294 to edge UNLV by one shot for its fourth consecutive conference title and an automatic berth into the NCAA regionals. The Lobos and Rebels entered the final day tied at 596, but UNM bested UNLV by one stroke on the final day to take the championship at 34-over 890. Colorado State finished in a distant third place at 917, followed by BYU (926), San Diego State and Wyoming (989).
UNM's surge was propelled by the play of Kristina Leckovic, who claimed medallist honors by following her MWC record second-round 67 with a final-round 75 to take a two-stroke win. Her 2-over 216 total finished two strokes clear of second place Sunny Oh of UNLV (218, +4). Kailin Downs of New Mexico earned third place at 8-over 222.
After a 7-over first round of 79, Aztec junior Shayna Miyajima (Wailuku, Hawaii/Baldwin HS) completed a solid final 36 holes at 73-76 to finish as the top Aztec in ninth place. Miyajima, who took fourth place at the 2002 championship, registered a three-round score of 228.
Junior Sandy Kim (West Linn, Ore./West Linn HS) slid from a share of third place to a tie for 14th after a final-round 83 put her at 232 for the championship. Senior Claire Riley (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS) improved her score for the second straight day registered the best Aztec round of the day with a 75 that earned 19th place at 237. Senior Jennifer Hoene (Acampo, Calif./St. Mary's HS) tied for 25th at 243, while freshman Toni Lutz (Anaheim, Calif./Valley Christian HS) recorded one of her best rounds of the season with a 78 and took 27th at 247.
With their regular season schedule complete, the Aztecs will await word of a potential berth in the NCAA Regionals, which begin May 8.
