Despite 20-Shot Improvement, SDSU Women Still Fifth At MWC Championship

April 25, 2003

SUNRIVER, Ore. - As the Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championship returned to the Sunriver Resort's Meadows Course after a first-round change of venue and snow and frost delays, San Diego State's play improved by 20 strokes for the second 18. However, a second-round 301 was not enough to get SDSU out of fifth place, where the Aztecs reside at 50-over 622 after 36 holes.

First-round leader UNLV was joined at the top of the standings by New Mexico, which showed the form of the highest-ranked team in the field by improving 36 shots on its first round in shooting a MWC-record 8-under 280 for the second round. The Rebels and Lobos share first at 24-over 596, while Colorado State is third at 612. Brigham Young is fourth at 619, just three shots in front of the Aztecs, while Wyoming is in sixth place at 660.

Aztec junior Sandy Kim (West Linn, Ore./West Linn HS) continues to share third place at 6-over 149. She followed up her first-round 76 recorded at the Awbrey Glen Golf Club with a 2-over 73 today at the Meadows Course. She is eight shots back of 36-hole leader Kristina Leckovic of New Mexico, who spurred the Lobos' surge with a MWC single-round record of 67 in the second round. Leckovic stands at 2-under 141, five shots ahead of second-place Sunny Oh of UNLV (146, +3).

Each Aztec improved at least three shots on her first-round score. Junior Shayna Miyajima (Wailuku, Hawaii/Baldwin HS), who finished fourth at the 2002 MWC at the Meadows Course, again found the links to her liking and matched Kim with a second-round 73. Miyajima is in 10th place at 9-over 152.

Senior Jennifer Hoene (Acampo, Calif./St. Mary's HS) followed her first-round 82 with a second-round 77 and is in 22nd place at 159. Senior Claire Riley (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS) had the best SDSU improvement on the day, dropping six shots from her first-round 84 with a 78 for the second 18 holes. Riley is tied for 24th at 162, while freshman Toni Lutz (Anaheim, Calif./Valley Christian HS) accomplished a five-shot improvement with a second-round 82 and stands 28th at 169.

The final round of the MWC Championship begins Saturday at 10 a.m.
