April 21, 2003

Box Score

Salt Lake City - Utah got a complete-game pitching performance from sophomore Clay Westmoreland and two-run homers from Wick Udy and Mike Westfall to defeat San Diego State, 7-2, at Franklin Covey Field in Salt Lake City Thursday afternoon. The win moves the Utes to the .500 mark on the year at 18-18 as they improve to 6-9 in Mountain West Conference play. The Aztecs, meanwhile, suffered their fourth straight loss and fell to 16-23 (9-7 MWC).

Westmoreland (4-3) scattered eight hits while striking out five, and worked out of jams in two of the first four innings. SDSU starter Mike Moat, who also tossed a complete-game, gave up seven runs on nine hits, with three of the runs being of the unearned variety.

The Aztecs jumped on top in the second inning when Jake McLintock scored from third on an infield single by shortstop Kyle Floquet. SDSU had a chance to do further damage in the inning, loading the bases with one out. However, a strikeout by Jordan Swaydan and ground out by Anthony Gwynn left the visitors with a slim 1-0 lead. SDSU also put two runners on with one out in the fourth, but that threat ended with a double play

San Diego State was made to pay for its inability to cash in when Utah's Mike Westfall lashed a two-out-two-run double to left center in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Ryan Khoury and Matt Ciaramella from first and third respectively.

Utah added three unearned runs in the next inning to up its lead to 5-1. The big blow during the rally was a two-run homer by catcher Wick Udy, his first of the year.

SDSU cut the lead to three with a run in the seventh as Jordan Swaydan's fly ball to center scored Kyle Floquet from third. The Utes negated that run with two of their own in the eighth inning, both coming on a two-run homer by Westfall.

Floquet, filling in for the injured James Guerrero, had three hits on the day. In addition, the Aztecs also got a pair of hits from Anthony Gwynn and Chad Corona. Mike Westfall led Utah with three hits and four runs batted in.

San Diego State and Utah continue their three-game series on Friday (April 18) at noon (MDT) at Franklin Covey Field. The game can be heard live on the Internet with Alan Horton's pregame show starting 10 minutes prior to game time.
