SAN DIEGO - With the San Diego State softball team's 3-0 victory over Utah in the first game of the Mountain West Conference doubleheader at SDSU Field on Saturday, the Aztecs made history, setting a new record for most consecutive wins in a season with 12. The previous record was set over a decade ago when the 1991 squad posted 11 straight victories. San Diego State (33-14, 9-0 MWC) went on to defeat the Utes in the second game, 1-0, to remain unbeaten in league play. With the losses, Utah dropped to 16-21, 5-5 MWC.
In game one, the Aztecs scored the first run of the contest in the third inning when junior third baseman Kelcy Murphy singled to bring home sophomore left fielder Erin Mahoney. SDSU's offense attacked again in the fifth frame when Murphy posted another RBI single, this time bringing home junior second baseman Joann Figueroa to put the Aztecs up, 2-0. San Diego State produced its final run of the game in the next inning as sophomore right fielder Jennifer Funk doubled down the left field line to advance freshman Bree Boyer to third before Figueroa came to the plate and notched a single to drive in Boyer for the third and final run.
Utah's offense struggled, as it only managed to advance a runner past first base once the entire game. Aztec pitcher Celena Velasquez (12-4) threw the fifth complete-game shutout of her freshman campaign. She gave up just two hits and did not walk a single batter. Jen Pursell (8-12) took the loss for the Utes.
Game two was a pitcher's duel, but Aztec Bre DeSanta (15-4) outlasted the Utes, earning the victory as she scattered four hits and struck out 10 batters over the course of eight innings in her complete-game effort.
Mahoney led off the eighth inning by drawing a walk before junior center fielder Janna Kovensky reached on a Ute error. Kovensky would later come around to score on Murphy's game-winning RBI-single to left field.
The Aztecs take their first conference road trip of the season when they travel to Las Vegas for a doubleheader against UNLV on Saturday, April 26.
