San Diego Women's Tennis Defeats SDSU, 5-2

SAN DIEGO - On the day that the San Diego State women's tennis program reached its highest national ranking in four seasons, the Aztecs were upset by their cross-town rivals. The Aztecs, ranked 25th nationally in the ITA poll released Wednesday, fell victim to 63rd-ranked San Diego, 5-2, at USD.

The Toreros, which won the doubles point and never trailed in the match, improved to 9-10 while the Aztecs, which suffered just their second defeat in their last 15 matches, fell to 18-5. The Aztecs previous four losses came to fourth-ranked USC, fifth-ranked California, sixth-ranked Washington and 30th-ranked UNLV. San Diego State entered the match with its highest national ranking since March 1999.

San Diego got off to a quick start winning at number two and number three doubles. USD's Lauren Leo and Lauren Perl claimed an 8-3 win at number three and Tara Livesay and Emma Murphy won 8-4 at number two to give the Toreros the doubles point. The Aztec duo of 39th-ranked Silvia Tornier and Indra Erichsen were victorious at number one doubles with a 9-7 win over Lauren Kazarian and Jenny Brown.

San Diego increased its lead to 2-0 with a win at number six singles when Leo defeated Sarah Sansom, 6-2, 6-1 and increased the lead to 3-0 when Perl disposed of Lindsey Hedberg at number two singles, 6-3, 6-3. The Toreros clinched the match with a win at number four singles, with Kazarian claiming a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Katja Karrento.

With the team match decided, the Aztecs rallied to take the next two points before losing the final match in a third-set super-tiebreaker. Tornier got SDSU on the board when her opponent, Murphy retired at number one. Tornier's doubles partner, Erichsen posted a 6-1, 7-5 victory at number five singles to cut the Aztecs deficit to 4-2.

USD's Livesay closed out the match with a three-set victory over Katalina Romero, 3-6, 7-5, (10-4).

The Aztecs are back in action this Friday when SDSU entertains 38th-ranked Oregon. The match will mark the final regular-season appearance for San Diego State seniors Hedberg, Karrento and Tornier. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the SDSU Courts.
