Melinda Smedley Earns MWC Track & Field Athlete of the Week Honors

April 15, 2003

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Melinda Smedley (Stockton, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Conference (MWC) Outdoor Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Smedley played a part in four of the Aztecs' six event titles as San Diego State claimed its second California-Nevada Collegiate Championship in the last three years last weekend. The co-captain was voted the meet's most valuable female athlete after winning the 100 and 200-meter dash in NCAA regional qualifying times of 11.75 and 23.87, respectively. Her winning 100-meter preliminary time of 11.65 on Friday is a career-best, the third fastest in Mountain West Conference history and the second best this season in the MWC.

Smedley was also a part of the team's winning 4x100 (45.20; NCAA regional qualifying time) and 4x400-meter (3:36.80; NCAA regional qualifying time) relays.

The award is the senior's first such honor and the second for the team this season, joining teammate Candace Hill (San Diego, Calif.), who earned the same award on March 25. The Aztecs have garnered the outdoor track & field athlete of the week award seven times since joining the MWC in 2000.

The San Diego State track and field squad continues its outdoor season by traveling to Walnut, Calif., for the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays, April 16-19.
