COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the second time in three weeks, San Diego State freshman Celena Velasquez was named the Mountain West Conference pitcher of the week. The honor comes following SDSU's sweep of conference foe UNLV and Centenary College.
Velasquez posted a 0.00 ERA over the weekend, earning the start in two of the Aztecs' four contests. The Tucson, Ariz., native went 2-0 in her two appearances and tallied the fourth complete-game shutout of her career. Against the Rebels, Velasquez had career-highs in innings pitched (10.0) and strikeouts (9) and gave up just four hits in leading the Aztecs to a 1-0 victory. In Sunday's game versus Centenary College, she matched her career-high effort in strikeouts, fanning nine and allowing only three hits, as the Aztecs defeated the Ladies, 5-3.
In Mountain West Conference games, Velasquez owns a league-leading 0.77 ERA to go along with a conference-best .147 opposing batting average. On the season, she is 10-4 with a 1.81 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 100.1 innings.
