Embrey, Moat Receive MWC Weekly Honors

April 7, 2003

San Diego - San Diego State junior first baseman Rielly Embrey and junior right-hander Mike Moat have been named Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week for their performances during last weekend's series against Brigham Young. This is the second career weekly honor for both Embrey and Moat.

Embrey, from Poway, Calif. (Poway HS), went 5-for-9 (.556) from the plate last week, as the Aztecs won two of three against BYU. In game one, he went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, a RBI and a run scored in the Aztecs 2-1 win. Embrey went 2-for-5 and knocked in two runs as the Cougars took game two, 7-5. In the series finale, he came on as a pinch hitter and smashed a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game into extra innings. The Aztecs went on to win the game, 4-3, in 10 innings. Embrey was also flawless from the field on the weekend at first base.

Moat, from Longmont, Colo. (Niwot HS), was victorious in his only appearance on the week, as the Aztecs downed BYU, 2-1 on Thursday. In 7.1 innings of work, he gave up one earned run on eight hits, while striking out one and walking none. With the victory, he moved his record to 3-3 on the season.

The Aztecs, currently 15-19 over and 8-4 in league play (2nd place), make the first of three consecutive MWC road trips when they travel to Albuquerque this weekend to face New Mexico beginning Friday (April 11) at 2:00 p.m. (MDT).
