SAN DIEGO - The No. 31-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to No. 41 San Diego Wednesday afternoon at the SDSU Courts. The Toreros won the doubles point and split the six singles matches, including a pair of three-setters, to take the win.
SDSU got off to a good start at number one double as the nation's sixth-ranked duo of Oliver Maiberger (Lorsch, Germany/Goethe Gymnasium) and Ryan Redondo (Carlsbad, Calif./Pepperdine) cruised to an 8-1 win. However, the Aztecs fell in hard-fought matches in the other two positions, including a 9-8 loss at No. 3 doubles.
The teams split their six singles matches, with each of the top three singles decided in three sets and USD taking two points. Maiberger, ranked No. 32 nationally in singles, claimed a three-set win at No. 1 singles and Armando Carrascosa (Calexico, Calif./Baylor) and Gabe Coren (Santa Cruz, Calif./Boise State) each won in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. But the Toreros won singles matches two-through-four and the doubles point ultimately decided the result with USD coming out on top.
The Aztecs return to action March 11 when they host Florida State at the SDSU Courts at 3 p.m.
