SAN DIEGO - Right-handed hurler Bre DeSanta pitched a no-hitter against St. John's University Tuesday afternoon at SDSU Field, as the Aztecs shut out the Red Storm, 8-0. It was the first career no-hit, complete game for the sophomore who now owns a 5-1 record and a team-best 0.64 ERA. DeSanta struck out six, while walking only two of the 20 batters she faced. With the victory, the Aztecs improved to 13-8 on the season and have won five of their last seven games.
San Diego State's offense attacked early, as junior infielders Joann Figueroa and Jacque Vaca both singled before junior third baseman Kelcy Murphy came to the plate and notched an RBI single. With runners on second and third, sophomore catcher Danielle Touhey doubled to bring home Vaca and Murphy to put SDSU up, 3-0.
SDSU scored again in the third, with Figueroa reaching first before Vaca sent a two-run homer over the left field wall. The home run was Vaca's first of the season, while Figueroa got her sixth multiple-hit game of the year. She was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in the contest with the Red Storm.
Junior Janna Kovensky drove in two Aztec runs in the bottom of the sixth, as sophomores Jennifer Funk and Erin Mahoney crossed home plate to give SDSU a 7-0 advantage. It was Funk's first run scored of the season, and both Funk and Mahoney stole bases to put them in scoring position. Figueroa's double up the middle sent the final Aztec home to claim the 8-0 victory in the sixth inning.
The Aztecs host the SDSU Tournament this weekend, facing Harvard at 11 a.m. on Friday at SDSU Field, followed by a game against Long Beach State at 1 p.m.
