Box Score

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team defeated Colorado State (5-3, 2-1) in both games of its doubleheader with the Rams on Sunday at SDSU Field. With the wins, the Aztecs improved to 26-14 overall and remain a perfect 4-0 in Mountain West Conference action. The Rams, meanwhile, dropped to 18-9, 1-3 MWC. San Diego State has now won a season-high six games in a row.

The Aztecs scored first in game one when junior third baseman Kelcy Murphy scored on a CSU error in the second inning. The Rams evened the contest at 1-1 on a Jennifer Mahoney RBI single.

Aztec Joann Figueroa's lead-off single down the right field line ignited SDSU's offense in the third frame. With two runners on, junior center fielder Janna Kovensky laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners before junior first baseman Jacque Vaca launched a one-out two-RBI single to center field. Freshman Lindsey Dismuke, who was running for Vaca, would later come around to score when sophomore catcher Danielle Touhey singled to right field to put the Aztecs up, 4-1.

SDSU brought another runner home in the next inning when Figueroa, who went 2-for-3 from the plate in the contest, drove in freshman shortstop Bianca Cruz to give the Aztecs a four-run advantage over the Rams.

Colorado State scored two more runs in the game, with Ricki Walker notching an RBI single in the fifth and Genevieve Kelly driving in a runner in the top of the seventh, but the Aztec defense held on to preserve the 5-3 victory.

Pitcher Celena Velasquez (8-4) struck out six batters in seven innings of work for SDSU as she earned her eighth win of the season. The freshman has three wins in her last three starts.

Aztec hurler Bre DeSanta opened the second game of the doubleheader by fanning the side in the first inning. The sophomore would go on to strike out six of the first nine batters she faced en route to a 10-strikeout performance. DeSanta gave up just three hits and allowed one run over the course of seven innings as she picked up her 12th win of the season.

San Diego State was down, 0-1 in the bottom of the sixth in the second game when Figueroa again propelled the Aztec offense with a lead-off single, followed by another Vaca two-run double to put SDSU up for good, 2-1.

San Diego State travels to Utah this weekend for a pair of games with BYU on Friday at 1 p.m. MST, then a doubleheader against the Utes on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. MST.
