LOS ANGELES - UCLA lived up to its No. 1 ranking by handing the sixth-ranked San Diego State women's water polo team a 10-2 defeat today at the Sunset Canyon Rec Center. The Bruins received three goals from sophomore Kristyn Pulver and a seven-save effort from senior goalie Jaime Hipp to win their 11th straight game.
The eight-goal defeat was the worst of the season for SDSU (13-8 overall, 3-5 MPSF), which has now lost two straight league games and is 0-3 in conference play on the road. UCLA improves 16-3 overall and 5-2 in the MPSF.
The Bruins scored the first two goals of the game before Aztec senior Amber Prestegard (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) tallied her 38th score of the season to bring SDSU within 2-1. UCLA scored two more goals in the second period to take a 4-1 lead into the half.
The Bruin offense scored the first three goals of the third quarter and finished with four in the period. Junior Holly Hartzell (Vista, Calif./Fallbrook HS) tallied SDSU's second and final goal of the game in the third quarter, her team-leading 41st score of the season.
UCLA capped the scoring with two goals in the final period.
Behind Pulver's hat trick, Maureen Flanagan and Natalie Golda also added two goals for the Bruins. For the Aztecs, junior Sara Daseler (Lodi, Calif./Hartwick) played the first two quarters in the cage and recorded three saves, while junior Ashley Zabel (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS) played the second half and made three saves.
