SAN DIEGO - The 24th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team won two three-set singles matches and rallied from behind to defeat 30th-ranked San Diego State 4-3 on Friday afternoon in Las Vegas.
The win was the first for the Rebels over the Aztecs in the regular season since 1999 and snapped SDSU's overall win streak at eight matches. UNLV improved to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in Mountain West Conference play while the Aztecs drop to 13-4 overall and 2-1 in league action, in suffering their first loss since March 7.
The Aztecs began the day by sweeping the three doubles matches for one team point. In singles play, Silvia Tornier overwhelmed Paulina Janus 6-2, 6-1 at the top spot to give SDSU a 2-0 lead.
UNLV evened things with wins by Amy Hadziosmanovic at No. 6 and Cindy Treber at No. 5. Then, Gyorgyi Zsiros came back from down a set to coast at No. 2, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 to earn the Lady Rebels their first lead of the day. However, Katalina Romero polished off Agnieszka Abram 6-1, 7-5 on court three to tie things 3-3.
The match came down to No. 4 where Tracie Chong rallied to force a third set. After falling behind 3-2 in the deciding set, Chong won the final four games to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and make the hosts victorious.
UNLV continues conference play by facing Wyoming Saturday while SDSU will tangle with Colorado State in Las Vegas. Both matches begin at 10 a.m.
