SAN DIEGO - For the second time in five days the San Diego State softball squad upset a ranked team, as it took two games from No. 22 Oregon State on Wednesday afternoon at SDSU Field, defeating the Beavers 3-0, 2-1. With the wins, SDSU improved to 22-14 on the season, while Oregon State fell to 22-13. The Aztecs are now 6-4 this year against teams currently ranked in the USA Today/NFCA Top-25 poll.

In the first game, San Diego State got on the board in the second inning when freshman Lindsey Dismuke, who was running for catcher Danielle Touhey, scored on a Jennifer Funk two-out RBI single. The Aztecs took a 2-0 lead in the third frame, as sophomore Erin Mahoney scored when Touhey grounded out to second base. Later in the inning, sophomore Lacey Craft drove in junior Janna Kovensky with a single to shortstop to put SDSU up for good, 3-0.

The Beavers threatened early in the first game, as Clare Burnum had a lead-off single in the first inning before Brynnen Guthrie singled through the left side of the infield. Kelly Peterson advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt, but Aztec pitcher Celena Velasquez managed to get out of the inning without allowing a run. Velasquez would go on to retire the next nine batters she faced.

Velasquez (6-4) picked up her sixth win of the season, scattering six hits in her sixth complete-game effort of the season.

Aztec pitcher Bre DeSanta (10-4) earned the win in SDSU's second game with Oregon State. Despite walking eight batters, DeSanta gave up just two hits and struck out six in the ninth complete game of her sophomore campaign.

San Diego State was down by one run in game two before Funk's single to right field sparked the Aztecs' third-inning rally in which SDSU got two runs on three hits. Funk came around later in the inning when Kovensky notched a sacrifice flyout to drive in the sophomore right fielder. Junior second baseman Joann Figueroa, who reached on a bunt single, crossed home plate when junior first baseman Jacque Vaca singled up the middle to give San Diego State a 2-1 lead.

Lisa Allen singled in the Oregon State seventh to represent the tying run, but DeSanta struck out Cara Maxey and got Steph Adams to ground out to shortstop Bianca Cruz to end the game as the Aztecs held on to claim the 2-1 victory.

SDSU opens the Mountain West Conference season with a game against New Mexico on Friday at SDSU Field. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
