SAN DIEGO - Aztec freshman Indra Erichsen (Husum, Germany) won the deciding singles match, as the 30th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team defeated No. 54 Purdue, 4-3, Wednesday at the SDSU courts. With the win, SDSU improved to 10-3 overall, while the Boilermakers fell to 5-6.
The Aztecs won all three doubles matches for the second time this week, after also doing so Monday in a 5-2 victory over Princeton.
In the singles competition, SDSU won both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, as junior Silvia Tornier (Hamburg, Germany) defeated Purdue's Gretchen Haynor, 6-1, 7-6, and junior Lindsey Hedberg swept Amy Walgenbach in two close sets, 7-6, 7-5.
After the Boilermakers came away with a sweep in the No. 3 through No. 5 singles matches, the dual came down to Erichsen and Purdue's Melissa Woods at No. 6 singles. Erichsen won the first set easily, 6-2, but then lost in a tiebreaker in the second (6-7), before coming back with a 6-3 win in the third and deciding set.
SDSU, which is playing four home matches this week, kicks off conference play Thursday at the Barnes Tennis Center with New Mexico at 2 p.m. The Aztecs will then round out the week with another Mountain West match Saturday versus Air Force at the SDSU Courts also at 2 p.m.
