Box Score

San Diego - San Diego State claimed a 13-5 win over Utah in the completion of Saturday's contest that was suspended due to inclement weather with SDSU leading 10-5 and batting in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Aztecs tacked on three more runs Sunday morning to improve their record to 9-15 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain West Conference. Utah fell to 8-9 on the year and 0-2 in league play.

SDSU senior Joe Carque evened his record at 2-2 after pitching the first six innings, which were played Saturday afternoon. Freshman Ronnie Lindsey came on the pitch the final three innings when play resumed on Sunday, facing the minimum nine batters and striking out six to record the save,

The Aztecs got game off to a positive start on Saturday with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a two-RBI double by Peter Stonard. However, the Utes countered with three in the third on RBIs by Cort Wilson (sac fly), Mike Basham (double) and Jake Jordison (sac fly). They upped their advantage to 4-2 in the next inning on a solo homer run by Mike Westfall.

Playing in intermittent light rain, SDSU regained the lead in its half of the fifth on an RBI single by Landon Burt and two-run double by James Guerrero. But Utah knotted the score at 5-5 with a run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Khoury.

With the rain starting again, San Diego State rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Landon Burt's RBI double scored a pair of runs, and he scored later in the inning on a balk. After the Aztecs loaded the bases with two outs, Jordan Swaydan delivered a two-RBI single to right to give the Aztecs a 10-5 lead.

With the rain coming down heavier, the game was halted at that point with Aztec runners first and third and two outs. SDSU's Joe Carque threw the first six innings for San Diego while reliever Dan Simonsen (0-1), who allowed the first three SDSU runs in the sixth, suffered the loss for the Utes.

The Aztecs added a pair of runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Burt and Guerrero, then tacked on one more in the eighth when Rielly Embrey drove home Jake McLintock with a base hit to right.

San Diego State and Utah were scheduled to complete their three-game series with a game Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
