SAN DIEGO - Junior first baseman Jacque Vaca homered to left field to lead off the Aztecs' second inning and put San Diego State on the board against Eastern Kentucky Saturday morning. SDSU would build on its 1-0 lead as it got nine runs on nine hits and defeated the Lady Colonels, 9-3, in the second day of action at the Aztec Invitational at SDSU Field. San Diego State dropped a 4-2 decision to Iowa later in the day.
San Diego State worked to produce an additional three runs in the third frame of its game against EKU, as sophomore Lacey Craft led off the inning with a walk. A series of fielders' choices and one Colonel error led to eight Aztecs reaching base on just one hit. Although Vaca's single up the middle to drive home junior Joann Figueroa was the only hit of the inning, Craft and sophomore Erin Mahoney also scored to put SDSU up, 4-0.
Eastern Kentucky answered in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs to cut the Aztecs' lead to one run, 4-3. Kelli Bromley opened the inning with a single to center field and later scored when Jen Norris doubled to right field. First baseman Amy Herrington tripled to right to bring home Jackie Hulcul before scoring on an Ashley Totten single.
The Aztecs extended their lead in the sixth and seventh innings, scoring two runs in each of those frames. Figueroa notched a two-run double in the sixth, while Craft's single in the top of the seventh scored sophomore Danielle Touhey and freshman Lindsey Dismuke to put SDSU up for good, 9-3.
San Diego State did not fare as well against Iowa, falling to the Hawkeyes, 4-2, Saturday afternoon. Freshman Deanna Richards' RBI single in the first inning gave the Aztecs a 1-0 lead, but Iowa capitalized on a three-inning scoring drought by SDSU to jump ahead, 2-1.
Mahoney singled in the top of the fifth to drive in sophomore Jennifer Funk to tie the game at 2-2. However, Hawkeye Stacy May's two-run shot over the center field wall in the bottom of fifth, her second home run of the game, proved to be the game-winning hit for Iowa, as the Hawkeyes earned the 4-2 victory.
San Diego State now owns an 18-11 overall record. The Aztecs return to action Sunday at SDSU Field in the final day of the Aztec Invitational. SDSU takes on the Nevada Wolf Pack at 11:30 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. game with the USD Toreros.
