SAN DIEGO -- Senior Gabe Coren posted a straight-set victory at number five singles to clinch the match as the 30th-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team defeated 45th-ranked Florida State 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon at the SDSU Courts.
After winning the doubles point, the Aztecs split the first four singles matches with the Seminoles, setting the stage for Coren's heroics. In addition to Coren, Oliver Maiberger and Felix Hardt all won singles and doubles matches for San Diego State.
The Aztecs number one doubles team of Maiberger and Ryan Redondo, ranked sixth nationally, defeated Romain Jurd and Alex Herrera, the 32nd-ranked double team, 9-8. Maiberger, ranked 32nd in singles, rallied down one set and two breaks in the second set for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 win in number one singles. Maiberger won the final nine games of the match in defeating the Seminoles' Mat Cloer.
San Diego State, 5-6 on the campaign, is back in action on Wednesday as the Aztecs travel to Los Angles to battle third-ranked UCLA. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m. PST.
