SAN DIEGO - The 29th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team won three three-set singles matches en route to a 5-2 victory over Rice on Tuesday afternoon at the SDSU Courts.
The Aztecs swept all three doubles matches to claim the first point of the match. The 53rd-ranked doubles team of Silvia Tornier and Indra Erichsen won 8-2 at number one. Katja Karrento and Katalina Romero claimed an 8-5 win at number two doubles and Lindsey Hedberg and Patricia Graf won 8-6 at number three doubles.
The Owls tied the score with a win at number two singles. Rice's Lauren Archer posted a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Graf. The Aztecs responded with three consecutive singles victories to clinch the match. Karrento defeated Karen Cho, 6-3, 6-2, in number four singles while Tornier rallied from a set down to defeat Blair Disesa, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 in number one singles. San Diego State clinched the match when Romero rallied to defeat Jeri Gonzales in number three singles, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6.
Rice got a team point when Erika Villalobos defeated the Aztecs' Sarah Sanson, 7-6, 6-2, in number six singles. Erichsen picked up the Aztecs final point of the day with a 3-6, 6-4, 12-10, third-set super tie-breaker at number five singles.
San Diego State improved to 7-3 on the season and will battle 30th-ranked Texas Christian on Friday afternoon on the SDSU Courts. Match time is set for 2 p.m. Rice is now 6-7 on the season.
