San Diego State Men's Tennis Upsets 15th-Ranked Pepperdine 4-3

Feb. 8, 2003

San Diego State junior Mike Coelho won a three-set match as the 30th-ranked Aztecs rallied to win four of six singles matches en route to a 4-3 upset victory over 15th-ranked Pepperdine on Saturday.

It was the first dual victory of the season for the Aztecs, which lost 4-3 to Arizona last weekend. The Waves fell to 6-3 on the campaign.

Pepperdine swept all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the team match. The Aztecs suffered a rare loss at number one doubles as sixth-ranked Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo lost 8-5 to Diego Acuna and Calle Hansen.

The Aztecs bounced back in singles play winning four of six matches, including three in straight sets. Maiberger, the 13th-ranked singles player, rebounded from his loss in doubles to defeat 81st-ranked Acuna 7-5, 6-2 in number one singles. The Aztecs also received victories in singles play from Redondo, Armando Carrascosa before getting the match clinching victory from Coelho.

The Aztecs will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Seattle for the Washington Tournament Friday through Sunday (Feb. 14-16).
