NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The San Diego State softball team lost the third game of a three-game series to the Cal State Northridge Matadors, 4-3, Sunday afternoon. The Aztecs defeated the Matadors yesterday, 5-2, to avoid the sweep, but now own a 2-3 overall record. Meanwhile, with the win, CSUN improved to 3-3 on the season.
The Aztecs scored first in the game, as freshman Bianca Cruz's single to right field brought home freshman Deanna Richards. With the bases loaded, Matador pitcher Kia Fennell walked sophomore outfielder Jennifer Funk, which resulted in freshman Lindsey Dismuke scoring.
Cal State Northridge got its first run in the fifth inning when, with one out, Katie Kearns grounded out to shortstop but advanced Jen Dishner home. The Matadors tied the game at two runs in the next inning when Jan Mosier was brought home by Jade Abel after doubling to right field and then advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt.
The contest remained a stalemate at 2-2 until the 11th inning when Aztec Jacque Vaca singled to right field to score Kelcy Murphy. The Matadors answered in their half of the 11th, as Fennell pinch hit for Jenny Wheeler and singled to left field. She would later score with one out on an error in centerfield. Matador Monique Lovell pinch hit for Christy Menefee and singled to right field to bring home Dishner and get the 4-3 victory.
San Diego State returns home to host the Campbell/Cartier Classic Feb. 14-16. The Aztecs' first opponent in the tournament is Loyola Marymount, whom they will play on Friday at 3 p.m.
