San Diego State Softball Picks Up Second Win of the Season

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team (2-2) made its first trip of the season Saturday, traveling to Cal State Northridge for a doubleheader with the Matadors. The Aztecs fell, 2-4, to CSUN in the first game, but came back to claim its second victory of the young 2003 season in the second game, winning 5-2.

San Diego State scored first in Game 1, before the Matadors got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Cal State Northridge scored a run in its half of the fourth, before the Aztecs tied the game at two a piece in the top of the fifth. The game went into extra innings before the Matadors scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn the 4-2 victory. For the Aztecs, freshman shortstop Bianca Cruz went 2-3 with one run scored and one RBI, while junior outfielder Janna Kovensky was 1-for-3 at the plate and also scored a run and notched an RBI.

Aztec freshman pitcher Celena Velasquez earned the first win of her collegiate career in the second game, pitching a complete game and allowing just two runs on eight hits. Second baseman Joanne Figueora was a perfect 2-2 at the dish, while third baseman Kelcy Murphy had two hits and one RBI to lead the Aztecs to their 5-2 victory.

SDSU will look to win the series against the Matadors when it faces Cal State Northridge tomorrow at noon for a single game.
