SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with its second victory of the season over Air Force, downing the Falcons 69-57, Thursday evening at Cox Arena. With the win, the Aztecs improved to 6-0 all-time versus the Falcons at home, improving to 9-14 overall and 3-8 in conference play, while Air Force fell to 7-17 and 1-10 in the Mountain West Conference.
With her final three pointer of the game, senior Jamey Cox (Waterloo, Iowa) set two Aztec single-season, three-point records. Cox broke her own record for most three-pointers in a season (70), while passing Carmelia Bloodsaw's 1991 season total for three-point attempts, finishing with 213.
Cox, who ended the game with a 4-for-12 mark from beyond the arc, and freshman Ashlee Dunlap (Los Angeles, Calif.) led SDSU with 16 points each. Dunlap fell just one rebound short of her MWC-leading ninth double-double of the season with a team-high nine boards. Aztec junior Nicolette McCartny (Chicago, Ill.) also contributed 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
SDSU never trailed in the game, beginning with a jumper by Dunlap, before Air Force forged its only tie of the game at 2-2, following a basket by Briana Thomas. The Aztecs then went on a 14-4 run to go up by 10 points, its largest lead of the half, on another basket by Dunlap.
The Falcons would manage to stay in the game, despite committing 18 first-half turnovers, to trail by just three points going into the locker room at 25-22.
After shooting just 28 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, the Aztecs kicked their offense into another gear, outscoring the Falcons 30-10 to open up the first of two, 22-point advantages at 55-33.
Just as SDSU appeared to get comfortable with its lead, Air Force made a late run, coming to within just six points with 1:49 left at 63-57, following a free throw by Thomas. Baskets by Tynisha King (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Dunlap, along with a pair of free throws by freshman Amber Fouse (Compton, Calif.), however, made up a 6-0 SDSU run to close out the 69-57 victory.
Falcon Shawna Neff finished with a team-best 15 points and eight rebounds, as Air Force out rebounded the Aztecs 47-28. SDSU, however, committed a season-low 13 turnovers to the Falcons' 30 and also tied a season-best for steals with 17.
The Aztecs return to action Saturday for its final home game of the season versus MWC foe New Mexico, beginning at 5:05 p.m. The game will be the last in San Diego for five Aztec seniors including Cox, Valencia Howard (Richmond, Calif.), King, Andrea Kiesling (Helena, Mont.) and Ashonda Williams (Crockett, Calif.).
