SAN DIEGO - Looking for its first conference win of the season, the seventh-ranked San Diego State women's water polo team hosts MPSF rival No. 8 San Jose State at 3 p.m. for the first-ever game at the new home of the Aztecs, the Ray and Joan Kroc Center.

  • The Aztecs (3-3 overall/0-2 MPSF) are aiming to snap a two-game losing streak after suffering losses in their first two MPSF matches on the road last weekend at No. 4 Long Beach State and No. 3 USC. SDSU's opponent today, San Jose State (5-4/0-0 MPSF), came off a nine-day layoff to lose 5-3 at UC San Diego yesterday.

Recapping Last Week's Action

  • There was no easing into conference play for the Aztecs last weekend, as SDSU traveled to a pair of top-4 MPSF opponents and came away with two losses.
  • SDSU played a Valentine's Day rematch against Long Beach State after the two teams faced off in the UC San Diego Arena Invitational the previous Sunday (a 6-5 Aztec win in overtime). This time, the 49ers emerged a winner thanks to a three-goal effort by Drue Wawrzynski. Senior utility Amber Prestegard led the Aztecs with three goals.
  • The following day SDSU traveled to USC to take on the third-ranked Women of Troy and came away with an 11-7 loss. USC senior Sofia Konoukh duplicated her All-American and MPSF Player of the Year efforts from a year ago in a three-goal, four-steal performance that netted her MPSF player of the week honors. Prestegard again led the Aztecs with three goals, while junior utility Holly Hartzell added two.

The Deft Left-Hander

  • With her strong left-handed shot, senior utility Amber Prestegard has provided San Diego State's scoring punch in the first six games of the season. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native leads the team with 17 goals and is second in assists with seven.
  • Prestegard has scored at least two goals in 5-of-6 games thus far and has led the team in scoring in each of those five games. She has converted 17-of-32 shot attempts this season for a percentage of .531.
  • With 193 career goals, Prestegard, already the program's career leader in assists with 87, now stands third on SDSU's all-time goal-scoring chart and just 12 scores shy of second place. She has a chance of reaching Larisa Baltgalvis's all-time Aztec record of 235 goals.

Scouting San Jose State

  • The Spartans are visiting San Diego for their second game in the city but first conference match of the year. SJSU has played two tournaments this season, going 2-1 at the Michigan Invitational and 2-2 at the Stanford Invitational, before losing at UCSD yesterday.
  • SJSU is led Christine Welsh's 11 goals, while Julie Cahill and Beth Harberts each have eight.
  • The Aztecs went 1-1 against the Spartans last season, splitting a pair of one-goal decisions, and are 6-4 all-time against SJSU.
