Janna Kovensky and Bre DeSanta Named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week

Feb. 18, 2003

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Aztec junior outfielder Janna Kovensky and sophomore right-handed pitcher Bre DeSanta have been named Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week. The honor comes on the heels of San Diego State's successful showing at the Campbell/Cartier Classic last weekend, in which the host Aztecs went 4-1, including a 2-1 upset over No. 4 Michigan.

Kovensky hit safely in all five of SDSU's games at the tournament, going 6-for-16 at the plate (.375). The San Diego native had a home run, one double, three RBI, five runs scored and one stolen base en route to leading the Aztecs to victories over Loyola Marymount, Central Florida, Michigan and Oregon. In the Aztecs' upset of the Wolverines, Kovensky scored the game-tying run to force the contest to extra innings. She ended San Diego State's run at the Campbell/Cartier in dramatic fashion when, on a 3-2 pitch, she sent a solo shot over the left field wall for a walk-off homer that gave the Aztecs a 1-0 win against Oregon in SDSU's final game of the classic. Kovensky is currently in the midst of a career-high eight-game hitting streak and is batting .312. This is the first career weekly honor for Kovensky.

DeSanta, a seven-time recipient of the conference's weekly honor, pitched three complete game shutouts last weekend. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native gave up only 11 hits and struck out 26 in 23 innings of work. DeSanta fanned a career-high nine batters in the Aztecs' 5-0 win against Loyola Marymount and gave up no hits and struck out four of the seven batters she faced in two innings of relief versus Kansas. Following a three-hit, eight strikeout, complete-game shutout of Central Florida, she picked up her final win of the weekend against Oregon, holding the Ducks scoreless, while fanning five. On the season, DeSanta is 3-0 and owns a 0.21 ERA, allowing only one run in 33 innings.
