Aztecs Drop Close One To Cougars

PROVO, Utah (AP) - Travis Hansen scored 19 points and Mark Bigelow added 16 to lead Brigham Young to a 66-64 win over San Diego State Monday night.

San Diego State had a chance to tie or take the lead with 9.2 seconds left but Deandre Moore missed a 3-pointer and Mike Mackell's put-back fell short.

With the win, the Cougars (18-6, 7-2) remain in second place in the Mountain West Conference while the Aztecs (12-10, 3-6) have now lost six of their last seven league games.

BYU's biggest lead was 60-46 and came on a dunk by Rafael Araujo with 9:31 left in the game. The Aztecs then went on a 16-3 run and cut BYU's lead to 63-62 when Evan Burns sank two free throws with 1:36 remaining.

The Cougars' only field goal in the final six minutes was a 3-pointer by Hansen with 1:15 left to give BYU a 66-62 lead. Aerick Sanders then cut the Aztec deficit to 66-64 with 43.2 seconds.

Trailing 28-23, BYU went on a 12-0 run to take a 35-28 lead on a basket by Jake Shoff with 2:17 left in the first half.

BYU took its first lead of the game at 29-28 on a basket by Jared Jensen and they led 40-36 at the half.

Moore led San Diego State with 16 points while Mackell added 14.
