STANFORD, Calif. - The 33rd-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 7 Stanford Monday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford. The loss drops the Aztecs to 2-3 on the season, while the Cardinal improve to 4-1.
The higher-ranked player or team won in all but one match in which national rankings were involved. The only exception came at no. 1 doubles, where SDSU's sixth-ranked team of Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo earned an 8-4 win over the nation's no. 3 team of Scott Lipsky and David Martin. However, Stanford won the other two doubles matches to claim the point.
Maiberger was the bright spot for the Aztecs, as the 13th-ranked senior took out Stanford's Ryan Haviland 7-6, 6-4 at no. 1 singles. However, the Cardinal won the other five singles matches to claim victory.
The Aztecs return to action at the USTA-ITA Indoor Championships in La Jolla, Calif., from Thursday-Saturday.
