POWAY, Calif. - The San Diego State softball team shut out the Loyola Marymount Lions, 5-0, Friday night in its first game of the 13th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic at the Sportsplex. Aztec sophomore pitcher Bre DeSanta fanned nine batters and pitched a complete game en route to the win and earned her first victory of the season. With the win, the Aztecs improve to 3-3 on the young season.
SDSU scored two runs in the fourth inning, as junior center fielder Janna Kovensky reached first base on a fielder's choice and then stole second. Kovensky would later score on a Lion error before junior catcher Jacque Vaca drove Murphy home. San Diego State added some insurance runs in the fifth as freshman shortstop Bianca Cruz scored, Kovensky's single to right brought sophomore outfielder Erin Mahoney home and Kovensky crossed homeplate with two away in the inning.
Freshman righfielder Bridgette Caron went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Vaca also had two hits and two RBI.
San Diego State faces Kansas, Central Florida and No. 4 Michgan tomorrow in the second day of action at the tournament. SDSU's final game of the weekend is on Sunday with an 11:30 a.m. tilt against Oregon.
