Aztecs Host Spring-Opening Lady Aztec Invitational

- Held at the 5,905-yard, par-72 Lake San Marcos Country Club, the Lady Aztec consists of a 15-team field. With four teams ranked among the Golfweek/Sagarin final fall ratings' top 100 but none higher than 60th, the Lady Aztec team competition seems to be wide open. Last Year At The Lady Aztec
- First-day leader Colorado State held off a late charge by No. 20 Washington to claim the 2002 Lady Aztec Invitational title. The Rams finished with a 626 to win by two over second-place Huskies (628) while No. 22 Kent State (633) took third.
- UNLV's Hwanhee Lee took individual medalist honors with a 4-over 150, one stroke ahead of second-place Mayumi Motoyama of CSU (151).
The Aztecs' Fall In Review
- SDSU's fall season got off to a tough start at the Comcast/Dick McGuire Invitational when senior Jennifer Hoene was forced to withdraw from the first two rounds with the flu. The Aztecs were forced to play short-handed with only four golfers and ended up with an 18th-place finish.
- Back at full strength for the next event, the New Mexico State Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate, the Aztecs dropped 27 shots from their first tournament and finished 16th.
- SDSU's best result and only top-10 of the fall came at the Matador Fall Classic. The Aztecs shot their best two rounds of the season, 305-301, for a 36-hole total of 606 that placed second, matching their best results since a win at the fall 2000 Heather Farr Memorial. Led by Miyajima's career-best tie for second, SDSU placed four individuals among the top five and ties.
- SDSU shot its low 54-hole score of the season with a 937 at the Kent Youel Invitational in Kapolei, Hawaii, but had to settle for 15th place.
- The Aztecs closed out the fall with a 12th-place score of 956 at the Las Vegas Founders Showdown.
Aztec Notes
- Miyajima recorded the Aztecs' best stroke average during the fall (77.64), finishing one stroke ahead of Kim (1,087-1,088). Last season, Kim finished a shot better than Miyajima 2,011-2,012.
- Kim has a streak of nine straight sub-80 rounds going into the Lady Aztec Invitational. She has not shot above 80 since a second-round 81 on Oct. 8 at the NMSU Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate.
- Two new golfers join the Aztec roster for the spring. Junior Abby Lasater, a junior college transfer who was part of a NJCAA National Championship team at Midland College in 2001, and freshman Ashley Forbes, from Palm Desert, Calif., and the runner-up at the 2002 CIF Southern Section, will likely redshirt in their first semester on the Mesa.
Head Coach Felicia Brown
- Head coach Felicia Brown is in her first season at the helm of the SDSU golf program after serving as assistant coach last season. Brown prepped locally at San Marcos High School before playing collegiate golf at Arizona. She boasts professional playing and teaching experience on the Players' West Golf Tour and in the LPGA teaching division, respectively.
