SAN DIEGO (AP) - Tony Bland scored 17 points and Mike Mackell had 15 as San Diego State held off San Diego 78-72 on Wednesday night, snapping a four-game losing streak to the crosstown rivals.
The Aztecs (9-4) blew most of a 17-point lead during the last 10 minutes, allowing the Toreros (6-7) to pull to 76-72 with 25 seconds left.
San Diego State made just one basket in the final 4:08, while also making 10 of 16 free throws. The Aztecs have won just three of their last 14 games against the Toreros.
Mackell, San Diego State's leading scorer, didn't start because he was late to a team meeting earlier in the day.
Roy Morris scored 22 for the Toreros, Jason Blair had 15 and Jason Keep had 14 points and 14 rebounds.
San Diego had a poor night shooting, making just 39.3 percent from the field and 53.6 percent from the line.
The Aztecs hit five 3-pointers in a 21-8 run that gave them a 57-40 lead with 11:30 left. SDSU had three straight 3-pointers, one by Chris Manker and two by Steve Sir. Sir had three overall in the run, and Tony Bland had the other.
